A Selection Committee is a committee of a company or other organization that has the responsibility of making hiring decisions for positions within the company. It can be a daunting task, and hiring the wrong person for a job can have long-term impacts on the business. In general, a committee of at least three people is recommended. It is also important to have a chairperson who is responsible for overseeing the process.

The selection committee is a vital part of the NCAA tournament, and it does more than just select the teams. It also sets the seeding of the field and makes plans for championship week.

In addition to selecting the 32 automatic-bid teams, the selection committee must also choose 36 at-large teams that will compete in the tournament. They do this by following several rules, including voting to rank teams 1 to 68 and bracketing the field based on conference opponents.

To begin, each member receives an initial ballot, which lists all eligible Division I teams in alphabetical order. The committee uses this information to develop its own opinion on which teams should be at-large selections based on play to date.

Each committee member also has access to a wide range of observation, consultation and data resources throughout the season and during selection week. This includes game results, conference monitoring calls, NABC regional advisory rankings, complete box scores and results, head-to-head results, a variety of computer metrics, player and coach availability and more.

After reviewing all the information, the committee members come together and start deliberating. This is a highly collaborative process that takes place over several days.

During the process, the committee will discuss and vote on each of the at-large teams. Once the votes are made, each team will be ranked based on its overall score.

The top-ranked teams will be placed in their preferred regions, and the remaining teams will be seeded based on the criteria used to determine the at-large teams. The committee will then begin placing the seeded teams in their first- and second-round sites during selection weekend.

The committee is comprised of members who are active in sports media, as well as representatives from the Pro Football Writers of America and each professional league. The committee also has 17 at-large committee members who are chosen by the Hall of Fame Board of Trustees and serve a five-year term.
