The committee will be composed of a broad range of individuals from the fields of art, science, technology, business, media and nonprofit/foundation. The committee will select the most promising proposals and will submit them to the Board of Directors for approval. The Board will be responsible for evaluating the proposal, and may ask for additional information or re-select.
As with other international organizations, the World Selection Committee will not seek or accept contributions from individuals who are members of governments, corporations or political parties. However, in some cases such participation is unavoidable and will not necessarily preclude the committee from selecting candidates for membership.
On the second day of camp, the gymnasts competed on all four apparatus for the all-around event. Biles was expected to dominate the competition and she did, scoring a total of 66.350 points to lead Jones and fellow 2023 world team member Shilese Jackson. However, despite her strong showing on vault and floor, Biles missed out on an automatic berth to the worlds when she scored just 15.0 on uneven bars.
Biles has a good chance to earn a spot to the world championships when camp concludes on Saturday night, but Jones and Jackson are both competing well. The top three finishers from the all-around event will receive automatic berths to the team and the remaining six gymnasts will be named as alternates closer to the start of the competition Oct. 1 in Antwerp, Belgium.
Among the other gymnasts competing for spots in the American squad are Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Jade Carey and the team’s best uneven bars performer, Jordan Chiles. In addition, Tokyo team silver medalist Shilese Jones and 2022 world champion Skye Blakely will vie for the final berths along with newcomers Katelyn Johnson, Kaliya Lincoln, Eveylynn Lowe, Zoe Miller and Joscelynn Roberson.
Hirwani is a former India captain and one of the most respected coaches in domestic cricket. Although he has retired from first-class cricket, he has remained active in the game, coaching at city and club level and working with the Maharashtra Cricket Association. He has also been a TV commentator, and has courted controversy for his criticism of Sourav Ganguly in the past.
The panel of experts will include academics, artists, musicians and cultural administrators who have extensive knowledge of international art and culture from a wide variety of time periods and regions. They will review the proposed content to ensure that the collection represents global diversity and is of high quality. The Committee will then recommend the best proposal to the UNESCO Director-General.
During the application process, World Selection Committee members are required to declare any conflict of interest with a candidate they consider for the award. They are also expected to recuse themselves if they feel they have a conflict of interest with a project that could be affected by their decision-making role. This will help to avoid the appearance of conflicts of interest, and it is hoped that these precautions will make the final outcome transparent.
