Selection Committee

If you are a member of the Senate, the Selection Committee is the panel that appoints members of the House of Representatives to select members of the Senate. The purpose of the Committee is to determine the suitability of a candidate for a position. The Committee takes evidence from candidates before making a recommendation to the Senate and publishes its report. While the report is nonbinding, Ministers are still required to consider the recommendations of the committee.

The members of the selection committee are a diverse group of university administrators, former student-athletes, and sitting athletic directors. Currently, the Selection Committee comprises eight former college football players, two members of the College Football Hall of Fame, and two former head coaches of FBS institutions. The committee members are composed of individuals who have an average of twenty years of university experience and 21 higher education degrees, including seven master’s degrees and two doctorates.

The selection committee members should have a wide range of perspectives, including those of clients, supervisors, and peers. Choosing people with diverse backgrounds is important to minimizing bias. As with any other committee, the committee members should reflect the company’s diversity and human diversity. For example, a key marketing manager should be appointed as chair of the committee, and two senior members of other departments should be appointed to be members of the committee. This strategy ensures that all perspectives are represented on the selection committee.

Members of the Selection Committee should not discuss the selection process with anyone except the applicant or relevant HR personnel. However, they should disclose any conflicts of interest with the applicant or their referees. If any conflicts arise, committee members may need to step aside. Applicants should also inform the chair of any prior conflicts that they may have with the committee members. If the Selection Committee determines that a member of the committee has a conflict of interest with another person, it should be published in the Gazette.

The Chair of the Selection Committee has the overall responsibility of overseeing the selection process. Members may include a Human Resource representative, but usually is the supervisor of the position. The Chair ensures that the process is transparent, timely, and professional. Additionally, the Chair coordinates the development of position documentation. If the Chair has a role in the selection process, the Selection Committee will be responsible for evaluating the applicant for the position. A chair of the Selection Committee also coordinates with the Human Resource department on a number of issues.

The selection committee starts its work the Tuesday before Selection Sunday, when college basketball season begins. The members of the Selection Committee discuss various scenarios that may arise in the selection process. The committee then meets again in February and releases its in-season preview of the bracket. It is extremely important that the Selection Committee has the right to make the decisions on the teams it will choose to play in March Madness. The 32 spots are filled by teams that automatically qualify to play in the tournament, while the remaining 36 spots are filled by at-large bid teams.
