The Selection Committee should be composed of national leaders representing government, business, entertainment and the nonprofit/foundation community who have expertise in one of the program’s six themes (Civic Dialogue and Peacebuilding, Open and Participatory Government, Women and Gender, Environmental Sustainability, and Youth Engagement). Ideally, the members of the Selection Committee are active participants and contributors to the development of the theme on which they serve.
At the time of nomination, members should disclose any potential conflicts of interest or any associations with a candidate. If they have a conflict of interest, they should recuse themselves from the discussion of the topic on which they serve. In the event of a tie vote, the chairperson will break the tie.
A maximum of two sittings a day should be devoted to thematic discussions on the Global Report, with the possibility, if necessary, of extending the sitting. The Committee should be able to conclude its work by the end of the second week of the Conference, at the latest.
Despite the lack of a full roster, the Ajit Agarkar-led committee has been working overtime to strike the right balance. Balancing experience with emerging talent will be key if India are to reach their full potential at the World Cup, which begins on May 21.
Biles was the front runner at USA Gymnastics’ Selection Camp, but her injury kept her out of competition last month and left her with some doubts about her fitness heading into the tournament. Leanne Wong and Madison Kocian are also in contention, with Wong having a slight edge on vault and uneven bars, but she was less impressive on those two events at the Selection Camp.
Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney are both likely to make the team, and if they perform well at the World Championships, it’ll be hard for Martha Karolyi to keep them off the squad. However, the Selection Committee is still searching for a fifth gymnast to round out its lineup, particularly after Riley McCusker withdrew from the camp due to a wrist injury.
Reigning Olympic all-around champion Sunisa Lee was invited to the camp, but declined, according to USA Gymnastics. Her health has been a major issue this season, and she’s only competed on balance beam and vault at recent nationals. The absence of the three-time Olympian means that USAG is likely to opt for someone else with strong skills on those two apparatuses, namely barristers Abigail Milliet and Maddie Desch.
